Don't be a turkey and drive drunk on Thanksgiving

POSTED ON: 11/20/2023

We post lots of warnings about various holidays and times when drunk driving are more common than average. In fact, we've shared lots of information about the day before Thanksgiving being a very dangerous day on the road.

We also post reminders begging people to drive safely and avoid drunk driving. As an ignition interlock provider, we come across so many people who drove after consuming alcohol and now have major regrets.

We came across a report that provides a lot of interesting information to add to our discussion.

Thanksgiving Fatal Car Crash Analysis

MoneyGeek analyzed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data from 2016 to 2020 to learn more about the car crash fatalities that occur the day before, the day of, and the day after Thanksgiving.

MoneyGeek’s analysis of the most dangerous days for DUIs in 2022 found that Thanksgiving had a 56% higher than average risk for DUI fatalities relative to seasonal and weekly trends. After seeing that, they decided to dig in deeper to understand the data better.

Key Findings

The report showed that all 3 days are dangerous on the road. While the day before and day after Thanksgiving technically have more car crashes, Thanksgiving day has the most DUI related car crashes. Thanksgiving day sees more deadly DUI-related crashes than the day before or after; 31% of all car accidents on Thanksgiving are related to DUIs.

Deadliest States for Thanksgiving Drivers

Holidays are often more dangerous on the road because of many factors, but alcohol is definitely one of the main ones. This isn't unique to our area. To drill in a little more though, MoneyGeek broke down the Thanksgiving traffic statistics by state to rank the deadliest states for drivers. Unfortunately, Alabama ranked 6th on their list of states with the most traffic fatalities during Thanksgiving week.

Takeaways

While this report was done mainly based on their association with the auto insurance industry, MoneyGeek's information shows us a reminder of just how dangerous it is to drive after consuming alcohol. We're all thankful for our lives and we're thankful of your decision to drive safely and soberly. If you have trouble making that decision on your own, contact us to see how our interlock products can help.
