Halloween is scary enough without drunk drivers on the road

POSTED ON: 10/28/2020

Halloween... It's such a fun holiday, filled with costumes, candy, and celebrations. Trick-or-treaters excitedly ask for festive handouts. Adults get in on the fun too with dressing up in elaborate costumes and enjoying spiked witches' brew. Boos and booze, it's the perfect combination. Until someone does something really scary...

Driving or walking drunk

Getting behind the wheel after drinking is always a very dangerous decision. On Halloween night, drivers have even more to pay attetnion to on the roads. They should also keep an eye out for pedestrians — whether they be children trick-or-treating or adults who have had too much to drink. While walking is usually a much safer option than driving, you should be especially careful walking on Halloween since there is so much traffic and so many distractions.

Halloween is scary enough without drunk drivers on the road

The U.S. Department of Transportation shared a spooky statistic: During Halloween night during the years 2014-2018, there were 145 people killed in drunk-driving crashes. This year’s holiday falls on a Saturday, which means there will likely be more parties than usual — and more drunk drivers on the streets.

Having a plan is a spook-tacular idea

If you plan to drink, plan for a sober driver to take you home. Is it your turn to be the designated driver? Take that role seriously and do not consume alcohol, not even one drink. Always remember to plan ahead if you will be celebrating:
- Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.
- If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
- Don't let a friend drink and drive. Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.
