Ignition interlock device customers tell us all the time that they wish they could go back to the day they got a DUI and make a different choice. Unfortunately they can't. But sometimes sharing their story with others helps in their journey.
So what's your alcohol story? Maybe you or a loved one got a DUI? Maybe someone you love was hurt by a drunk driver? Maybe you were raised by an addict? Or you are one? Maybe you've lost a job or family over your drinking problem? Maybe you're willing to tell us your story? We will keep it anonymous. We're working on stories for Alcohol Awareness Month (April) and would love some real stories/thoughts. Just email your story to firstname.lastname@example.org by March 20, 2023. Only share what you feel comfortable with us sharing on our blog, and keep in mind we will not use your name in the posts.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and many other agencies try to increase their efforts to reach people who may not fully appreciate the dangers of unhealthy alcohol consumption. The main target of this program was originally college-aged students who might be drinking too much as part of their newfound freedom. It has since become a national movement to draw more attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism as well as how to help families and communities deal with drinking problems.
If you're a light to moderate drinker and you're healthy, you can probably drink alcohol as long as you do so responsibly. Some people claim possible health benefits of consuming small amounts of alcohol. These benefits may include reducing the risk of developing heart disease, ischemic stroke, and possibly even diabetes. The social and psychological benefits of alcohol also can't be ignored.
A few members of our community shared some of their favorite happy memories they associate with alcohol:
- "Drinking margaritas with the girls is always a good time!"
- "Kids playing, music singing, food cooking, wine sipping... finalized with the family at the dinner table...that’s a very happy time!"
- "Many of my favorite fishing camp memories include a few cans of beer and a few good friends."
- "I love our annual girlfriends get together for dinner with Italian food and a glass of wine!"
For many of us alcohol is "no big deal". We love a margarita with dinner or occasional drinks with friends but we can't really say it affects our life much. But that's definitely not true for everyone.
Many Americans die because of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and many more are admitted into hospitals, psychiatric facilities, jails, and prison. Alcohol places people at risk for things like divorce, unemployment, bankruptcy, and physical and emotional problems such as depression. Excessive alcohol use is known to kill about 88,000 people in the United States each year, but a CDC study suggests it is also a drain on the American economy. Underage drinking, binge drinking, alcoholism, and drunk driving impact so many lives in so many horrible ways.
Heavy drinking can damage the liver and heart, harm an unborn child, increase the chances of developing some cancers, contribute to depression and violence, and interfere with relationships. Alcohol is a toxic and addictive drug.
In our line of work as an interlock device provider, we meet so many people whose lives have been forever changed by their decision to drive after drinking. Ignition interlock device customers tell us all the time that they wish they could go back to the day they got a DUI and make a different choice.
As long as you won’t be getting behind the wheel, it’s probably fine to enjoy that after-work cocktail or a few beers at the fishing camp. But if you or someone you know has trouble keeping the alcohol intake at a healthy level, it’s time to get help. Smart Start of Alabama offers tools such as ignition interlock devices to help with voluntary and mandated alcohol monitoring. We are here to help.
