Memorial Day: Don't cave to the temptation of drinking and driving

Memorial Day 2020 occurs on Monday, May 25th. Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many people observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, others hold family gatherings. Some towns have parades and other celebrations. It also unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season. 

PLAN AHEAD TO STAY SAFE

Memorial Day is known for many things, and unfortunately being deadly due to drunk driving is one of them. When you celebrate Memorial Day, make sure to do so safely. One way to avoid drunk driving is to have a plan BEFORE you start drinking. Your safe driving plan may include a designated driver, public transportation, or a ridesharing service.

SOBER DRIVING

Another way to avoid drunk driving is to avoid drinking alcohol completely. You can drink a soft drink instead of a beer and still enjoy the fun. Or if you're attending a family gathering and feel comfortable inviting yourself over to spend the night, have a drink at the celebration but don't drive home until the next day once you're sober. Or host the party at your home and offer your guests that same option.

KNOW THE DANGERS OF DRIVING DRUNK

Keeping the roadways safe is a great way to honor the men and women who gave their lives for our country. A DUI arrest can cost thousands of dollars including fines, court costs, attorney fees, and other expenses. If you do drink a small amount of alcohol and plan to drive only after sobering up, make sure you understand the effects of alcohol on your body. Even a small amount of alcohol can still impact your driving.
