Memorial Day is one of the most dangerous holidays on the road

POSTED ON: 05/27/2021

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2021 occurs on Monday, May 31st. Many people observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, others hold family gatherings. Some towns have parades and other celebrations. It also unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season. Memorial Day is known for many things, and unfortunately being deadly due to drunk driving is one of them. When you celebrate Memorial Day, make sure to do so safely.

3 year study results: One of the most dangerous holidays on the road

Memorial Day is consistently one of the deadliest holidays for drivers and passengers on U.S. roadways. As of 2020 study results, it holds the #2 spot, but in 2019 it was the deadliest holiday for drivers and passengers on America’s roadways.

Memorial Day 2021 may look different than past years, but as more businesses and cities open back up after pandemic restrictions it's likely that we'll see heavy traffic and an increasing number of events serving alcohol.

Keeping the roads safe

One way to avoid drunk driving is to avoid drinking alcohol completely. Have a soft drink instead of a beer, and you'll avoid a costly mistake. A DWI arrest can cost thousands of dollars including attorney fees, fines, court costs, and other expenses. If you're attending a family gathering and feel comfortable inviting yourself over to spend the night, have a drink at the celebration but don't drive home until the next day once you're sober.

Another way to avoid drunk driving is to have a plan BEFORE you start drinking. Your safe driving plan may include a designated driver, public transportation, or a ridesharing service.

Know the dangers of drunk driving

If you do drink a small amount of alcohol and plan to drive only after sobering up, make sure you understand the effects of alcohol on your body. Even a small amount of alcohol can still impact your driving. Keeping the roadways safe is a great way to honor the men and women who gave their lives for our country.
